Numicon Online NZ subscription includes all the lessons and teaching resources and the NZ version digital ebooks of the printed Teacher Handbooks.

This provides a choice for teachers to use.

What Is Included

  • Guidance: How to teach mathematics is provided in the e-handbooks and lesson platform, including support for explicit instruction, rich tasks, communication, and building positive maths identity.
  • Teaching progressions: Spiral sequencing helps students revisit concepts across strands and throughout the year to build depth and long-term memory.
  • Planning: Lessons connect to NZ Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum, with NZ places, names, and currency. Introductory front-of-class slides and templates support weekly planning.
  • Lesson content: Rich tasks, games, discoveries, practice, and recording opportunities support collaboration and independence while extending more able learners.
  • Lesson design: Low-threshold, high-ceiling learning includes prior learning links, context setting, explicit step-by-step teaching, follow-up discussion, and extension opportunities.
  • Resources include community images, vocabulary, teacher maths knowledge, whole-class discussion prompts, photocopy masters, home and school activities, student book prompts (Years 3-8), assessment files, front-of-class videos, and step tabs for each lesson sequence.
  • Assessment: In-lesson prompts and watchpoints, weekly assessment cards, Explorer Progress pages, and tracking files with curriculum connections.

Numicon Is Powerful For All Learners

Numicon is known for success in Phase 1, and is also effective in Phases 2 and 3 when concepts become more complex. Number ideas are abstract, so students need concepts represented in a wide variety of ways every year.

The Numicon approach provides multi-sensory activities in everyday mathematical contexts across Phases 1, 2, and 3. Year-by-year teaching overviews build on prior knowledge, with detailed lesson explanations from Year 0 through Year 8.

Activating Prior Knowledge

A strong foundation begins with activating prior knowledge. Numicon reviews previous learning systematically so students can connect new ideas more effectively.

Step-by-Step Learning

New material is introduced in small, manageable steps with clear visual representations to reduce cognitive load and strengthen understanding.

Encouraging Explanation

Students are prompted to explain their reasoning and connect new ideas to what they already know, using explicit mathematical language.

Utilising Diverse Representations

Multiple representations support flexible thinking. Tactile and visual models help students understand patterns, numbers, and operations more deeply.
